"Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose." - Eckhart Tolle
Imagine letting go of all your worry.
What comes up for you? If you don't worry, will something go wrong? Do you feel anxiety about letting go?
That's your lower brain, telling you that worry is necessary. Your lower brain is designed to keep you safe. It's always scanning for danger. This served us very well as primitive humans. If we were rejected by the tribe it almost certainly meant death.
Nowadays, if you are rejected by the tribe it only feels like you are going to die. Truth is, you can just go find some more friends. No catastrophe.
But your lower brain doesn't know that. So it keeps trying to make sure nothing bad happens. And it imagines all the bad things that could happen.
We spend so much energy trying to anticipate pain and discomfort so that we can avoid it. In doing so, we cause ourselves a whole lot of pain and discomfort.
What?
We create negative emotion to avoid feeling negative emotion?
That makes sense.
How about we just experience the negative emotion once, when something bad actually does happen?Which, by the way, is almost never the thing we were worrying about to begin with.
Next time you find yourself indulging (you read that right, it's an option) in worry, notice that you are doing it and decide to let it go. The only thing its protecting you from is living a full life.
