I saw this quote the other day in a magazine I was reading. It seemed so simple at first, but I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Ring the bells that still can ring - Things don't always work how we think they are going to. There have been times in my life when I've stubbornly hung onto what I thought "should" have happened. But the truth is, when we argue with reality, we lose. Every time. Instead of being angry about what I think is lost, I want to create and love and contribute in the ways that are still available to me.
Forget your perfect offering- As my teacher Brooke Castillo says, "Perfectionism is for scared people". If perfection is a prerequisite for my work, then I don't have to do it. So I'm forgetting perfect, because I know my contribution is important despite the flaws.
There is a crack in everything - We live in an broken world. It's supposed to be that way. Sometimes I forget that and I think something has gone wrong. My kids are fighting. People I love have health problems. My ADHD child feels left out at school. It's all part of it. As humans we signed up for all of it, the pain and the joy. Nothing has gone wrong here.
That's how the light gets in - We cannot heal unless we are broken. Our muscles don't get stronger until they are torn. We cannot experience love without loss. It is by design.
It is pain that causes us to seek for peace.
